Basic concept

Abby is a Feature Flagging and A/B Testing tool, developed by developers for developers. Its USP is a seamless integration of A/B tests and feature flags into CI/CD processes, allowing new features to be brought to the market better and faster.

Existing solutions for A/B Testing & Feature Flagging were too complicated for me, and the integrations were not developer-friendly. Abby is meant to be just that: a tool that developers and marketers love.

THE WHOLE STORY

Our colleagues Tim and Edris developed an AB Testing tool for themselves during dynaWeek (our annual hackathon). Because all existing AB Testing tools were addressing online marketers and not software developers. And as software developers, Tim and Edris wanted something that integrates cleanly into existing software - with good IDE support and high reliability.

Over the months, we pivoted Abby to focus on Feature Flagging. We now use it in many projects, allowing us to bring new features to the market better and faster. It's open source and available on GitHub for free. We host it ourselves at https://www.tryabby.com.

CHALLENGES

As a service provider, it's always a challenge to develop our own products alongside client projects. With Abby, it worked well because we chose open source. Also, some new people joined us who made significant contributions. This allowed them to learn our work culture and get into different tech stacks. Win-win!

THREE APPLICATIONS

The product consists of a landing page for marketing purposes, an admin dashboard for users, and a Dev tool for developers. We use Abby to improve Abby itself, even with AI-generated A/B tests.

DEVELOPMENT
IS NOT JUST CODING

We use a mono-repo to consolidate various technologies and workflows. Based on this, dedicated SDKs are gradually introduced to expand A/B Testing and Feature Flags to various stacks. Thanks to open source, we can do this alongside other work. We develop significant new features separately in a planned Lean Cycle.

RESUME

Lean sounds cool, and everyone wants to do it. But let's be honest: in practice, it rarely happens. Why is that? In the end, it's not difficult, but mainly a matter of discipline. With Abby, we continuously gathered feedback from customers and incorporated it into development. Now we have a relevant product in the market.
