igus configurator platform
Development of a platform for online configurators
⎯
Basic idea
Over the years, a large number of online tools and configurators were to be developed on a software platform. The aim of these tools is to advise, configure and sell products and product systems. The resulting technical drawings serve the factory in production.
igus is a global leader in high-performance polymers for motion applications. Since 1964, igus has been developing “motion plastics” such as energy chains, plastic plain bearings, flexible cables, linear systems, and robotics components. Its maintenance-free, lubrication-free plastic solutions enable durable, lightweight, and cost-efficient machinery — trusted by customers across 80+ countries and 50 industries.

The implementation of configurators for individualization
of igus products is very complex.
With dynabase, we have a powerful, loyal and reliable partner
at our side, with whom we can meet this challenge together.
dynabase thus contributes significantly to the success of our product
configurators and the digitalization of igus.

THE WHOLE STORY
In 2017, we developed a prototype for configuring linear guide systems for our customer igus GmbH. The aim was to replace the previous generation based on Flash and at the same time build a platform to develop and operate further configurators.
Over the years, we have built up this platform together with igus. Today, more than 30 different online tools and configurators are operated on it by an agile international development team.
Among other things, we have incorporated the following expertise into this setup:
- Introduction of SCRUM
- Microservice architecture
- Angular, Express / NestJS
- 2D configuration in the browser
- Machine learning / heuristic search methods
- DevOps / Jenkins / NX
- AWS Cloud Operations
- Generation of technical drawings (PDF) for assembly in the factory
Frank Blase, the owner of igus GmbH, had the vision that an igus product is only an igus product when it can be configured online. We are proud to have been instrumental in the success of this inspiring vision.
HIGHLIGHTS
drylin linear guide expert
The first configurator has been continuously improved over the years. It follows the classic Finder+CPQ (Configure Price Quote) approach, but also offers a service life calculation. This allows users to calculate the service life they can expect for the load of their forces.

e-chain expert
This configurator, known as "Expert", also follows the Finder+CPQ approach and includes a service life calculation. However, it can be described as its big brother because the complexity is considerably greater.
It uses ML (machine learning) to speed up the search for suitable products. It also has a 2D configurator for the internal layout of energy chains. This internal division can also be automated by an AI if required. At the end of a configuration, all the data is transferred into technical drawings that are used for assembly in the factory - which significantly benefits production.

Spindle motor expert
The configurator is one of the simpler ones. We have developed a framework based on the kopla platform in order to be able to develop several such structurally identical configurators quickly and cost-effectively.

RESUME
The technical and cultural challenges involved in setting up such a platform and the associated development department are enormous. Thanks to our strong technological expertise and our agile DNA, we were able to ensure sustainable success for our customer igus.
igus was able to increase its turnover from 670 million to 1.115 billion in the same period from 2017 to 2023.
We have incorporated our experience and culture into the company in such a way that igus now holds all the cards and can look to the future with confidence.
