# Web Configurator Development: Technology, Effort & Costs

## ![Web configurator](https://www.dynabase.de/hs-fs/hubfs/Gro%C3%9Fe-Konfiguration.png?width=2560&height=1351&name=Gro%C3%9Fe-Konfiguration.png) What is a web configurator and when is it worth it?

A [web configurator](https://www.dynabase.de/en/services/online-konfigurator-erstellen-lassen?hsLang=en) is a browser-based application that lets users put together a product or system interactively, check it and often order it directly. In a B2B context, configurators do several jobs at once: they advise, qualify leads, reduce ordering errors and take work off the sales team.

For companies with complex products that come in many variants, a well-built web configurator isn't a nice-to-have. It's a strategic tool.

A configurator is usually worth it when:

- products have many variants, dependencies or compatibility rules
- the sales process currently relies heavily on manual consulting
- customers want to put together or size products themselves
- technical drawings, bills of materials or export files should be generated automatically.

At dynabase, we've been building web configurators for industrial clients for years. Based on that experience, this article answers the most important questions companies ask before commissioning a project like this.

## What types of web configurators are there?

Not every configurator is the same. Effort and technology vary considerably depending on complexity and use case.

Simple product configurators

These let users select variants such as color, size or material and show the price in real time. Technically, they're easy to build with modern frontend frameworks and work well for e-commerce products with manageable rule logic.

Complex B2B configurators with compatibility checks

These store rules about which components can be combined. With every selection, the configurator checks whether the overall system is technically valid. We build this type for our long-standing client igus, for example, which runs more than 30 online tools and configurators on a shared platform, including configurators for energy chains, linear guides and robotics components. You'll find more on this in our project references.

Configurators with 3D output and export

The most technically demanding type: the configured product or system is shown as a 3D model and can be exported as a STEP file or a similar format. This lets customers check whether a solution fits their production environment before they order. That's exactly what we built for the RBTX Machine Planner: customers configure a complete robot cell and then download a STEP file they can use to test the setup directly in their CAD environment.

## How does web configurator development work?

From our experience with projects like the RBTX Machine Planner, one approach has proven itself: it gets you to a working result quickly while leaving room for iteration.

### Phase 1: Decide between takeover and new development

For a new project, we start with a discovery workshop where we work through the configuration logic, the target audience and the technical requirements. When taking over an existing configurator from another provider, as we did with the RBTX Machine Planner, the first task is to understand what's really there. Incomplete source code, missing libraries or a mix of different frameworks are not unusual.

### Phase 2: Get to a working version fast

For complex configurators, we recommend getting the simpler parts of the system running and deployed first. This creates a shared foundation early on and lets the client's product team give feedback from the start. In the RBTX project, the first configurators were live within two to three weeks.

### Phase 3: Expand core features iteratively

Once the first version is running, we work on the complex core features in parallel: export pipelines, admin dashboards, integrations. After the first go-live, the RBTX team gave intensive feedback that uncovered many bugs that had already existed in the legacy system. This early feedback loop is worth more than any internal quality assurance.

## How much does a web configurator cost?

A flat figure wouldn't be credible here. Costs depend on three factors: the complexity of the configuration logic, the scope of the backend integration, and whether special features such as 3D export or automatic PDF generation are needed.

Rough guidance from our projects:

Simple product configurator (variant selection, price calculation, no complex rule logic): development effort in the low to mid five-figure range, can be delivered in a few weeks.

Complex B2B configurator (compatibility checks, admin dashboard, API connection to ERP or shop): several months of development depending on scope, effort in the mid to high five-figure range.

Configurator with 3D export and CAD integration: significantly more effort because of the export pipeline. Here we typically expect a six-figure total investment, including infrastructure and initial operation.

Important:
The initial development effort is often not the biggest cost factor. Maintenance, further development and ongoing adjustments to the configuration logic tie up resources in the long run. We've been supporting the igus configurator platform since 2017 and the RBTX Machine Planner since 2019.

## Configurators in the context of agentic commerce

Today, a web configurator is no longer just a tool for human users. With the rise of [AI agents](https://www.dynabase.de/en/services/ki-agenten-entwicklung?hsLang=en) that research, compare and configure products on their own, there's a new requirement: configurators also need to be machine-readable.

In practice, that means clean APIs, structured product data and logic that can be consumed not only in the browser but also by external systems. We describe this shift in detail in our article on [agentic commerce](https://www.dynabase.de/en/blog/agentic-commerce?hsLang=en): when AI agents no longer just recommend but configure and buy on their own, the requirements for digital products change fundamentally.

For companies commissioning a configurator now, it pays to factor in this perspective from the start.

## Which agency should you choose?

Developing a web configurator is not a standard web project. It takes a team that can handle both frontend complexity and backend logic, and ideally has already completed projects of similar complexity.

What matters:

- Verifiable reference projects of similar complexity, not just showcase screenshots
- Experience with your specific export requirement, for example STEP, PDF or CSV
- Willingness to commit to a long-term partnership, because a configurator keeps evolving
- Technology independence: the choice of stack should follow the project goal, not the agency's standard toolkit

dynabase has been developing web configurators for industrial clients since 2017, first for igus and today for other clients across different industries. Our projects show that it's often not just about the initial build, but about a lasting technical partnership.

## Conclusion: What companies should know before starting a configurator project

A web configurator is one of the most complex web projects a company can commission. At the same time, it's one of the most effective digital tools in B2B, because it brings sales, consulting and product data together in a single, scalable system.

The key points at a glance:

- The choice of technology, especially in the frontend, has a major impact on performance and maintainability. We recommend Svelte for complex configurators.
- Getting to a working version quickly is worth more than months of concept work before the first commit.
- Export functions for STEP, PDF or other formats are more technically demanding than they look and should be included early in the project plan.
- Configurators aren't one-off projects. Plan capacity for iteration and maintenance from the start.
- With [agentic commerce](https://www.dynabase.de/en/services/agentic-e-commerce?hsLang=en) in mind, it pays to build configurators API-first from day one.

## **Frequently Asked Questions About Web Configurator Development**

How much does it cost to have a web configurator developed?

It depends on the complexity of the configuration logic, the scope of the backend integration and whether special features such as 3D export or automatic PDF generation are needed. As a rough guide from our projects: simple product configurators are in the low to mid five-figure range, complex B2B configurators with compatibility checks and ERP or shop integration in the mid to high five-figure range, and configurators with 3D export and CAD integration typically require a six-figure total investment.

How long does it take to develop a web configurator?

A simple product configurator can be delivered in a few weeks. Complex B2B configurators take several months, depending on scope. We recommend getting a first working version live early: in the RBTX Machine Planner project, the first configurators were live within two to three weeks.

What types of web configurators are there?

There are three main types: simple product configurators for selecting variants with real-time pricing, complex B2B configurators that check whether components are compatible, and configurators with 3D output that export the configured system as a STEP file or a similar format.

Which technology is best for a complex web configurator?

The frontend choice has a major impact on performance and maintainability. For complex configurators, we recommend Svelte. Configurators should also be built API-first, so their logic can be used by external systems and AI agents, not just in the browser.

What should you look for when choosing an agency for a web configurator?

Look for verifiable reference projects of similar complexity, experience with your specific export requirements such as STEP, PDF or CSV, willingness to commit to a long-term partnership, and technology independence. The choice of stack should follow the project goal, not the agency's standard toolkit.
